Deodorants checked against their ingredient lists

Unscented is not the same as fragrance-free

An unscented product can contain a masking fragrance that cancels other smells. A fragrance-free product has none added. Some brands use unscented on products that list fragrance in the ingredients, so the front label alone is not reliable.

What to look for

On the ingredient list, look for fragrance or parfum, and for named allergens such as linalool, limonene, geraniol and citronellol. Plant extracts and essential oils can also be scented, even without those words.

If you react to deodorant

Fragrance is only one possible cause. If irritation persists, stop using the product and ask a pharmacist or clinician.
